"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. A host of famous admirers have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to make music."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But the sister act will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
