New research reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
