Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
